PURPOSE:To provide a novel 4,4'-binaphthyl dicarboxylic acid compound useful as a raw material suitable for producing polyamide resins and polyester resins having various excellent physical properties. CONSTITUTION:A novel 4,4'-binaphthyl dicarboxylic acid compound. The compound is obtained by dehalogenation-dimerizing a 4-halogenonaphthoic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof in the presence of a palladium catalyst, water and a polyhydric alcohol and/or a formaldehyde compound. The method is profitable.
