A device for detecting a first entity (for example, a chemical entity or physical stimulus) includes a support (10) having a surface with a first hydrophobic layer (14) non-diffusively bound to the surface. A second hydrophobic layer (16) overlies the first layer to form a bilayer. A second entity (20), reactive with the first entity, is positioned within the bilayer. The second entity, while within the bilayer, is capable of reacting with the first entity to produce a local change in a detectable property of the bilayer structure.
