Cleaning compositions and methods for cleaning using such compositions are disclosed. In one embodiment the composition comprises a debris solubilizing amount of at least one alkoxylate selected from compounds having the formula <CHEM> and mixtures thereof, wherein R contains about 5 to about 11 carbon atoms and is preferably selected from alkylene radicals, substituted alkylene radicals, alkenylene radicals and substituted alkenylene radicals, each x and y is independently selected from integers in the range of 0 to about 20, provided that the sum of all the x's and y's is at least 1, and each z is independently selected from the integers 0 and 1, provided that at least one of the z's is 1.
