Headstock for a machine tool, in particular for a machining centre, characterized in that it has a motion unit which consists of: a body (28) with items located inside thereof: a slider (13) on a shaft (24); the slider is guided by guides (38, 39), an a set of pushers (34) with bumpers (35) is installed inside the body (28), and electric switches (37) coupled to them; the slider (13) co-operates with a circumferential cut-out (8') on a sleeve (8) with a latch (10); moreover, the body has an intermediate shaft (3) joined with a slider (16) and outfitted with gears (22, 23) which are coupled with co-operating gears; with a gear (7) seated on the spindle (2), and with a gear (42) on the input drive shaft (4); and besides, the sleeve (8) has inner teeth (9) which are coupled with a gear (43) located on the gear.<IMAGE>
