PURPOSE:To produce a transparent gel which has a high water content, high mechanical strengths, and an excellent transparency and is useful as a medical material such as a contact lens or an intraocular lens by treating an aq. PVA soln. contg. a salt compd. at a low temp. CONSTITUTION:An aq. soln. contg. PVA pref. having a degree of polymn. of 200-10,000 and a degree of saponification of 70-100 % and a salt compd. (e.g. NaCl) is treated at -50 to 0 deg.C).
