A method for preparing urethane comprises reacting a mixt. soln. of N-containing organic cpd. and OH-containing cpd. with CO in the presence of a ruthenium cpd. as a major catalyst and a halogen anion as an auxiliary catalyst at 80-200 deg.C and 10-500 atm. The halogen anion is prepd. by contacting crown ether of formula (- CH2-CH2-Y-)n with a halogenated cpd. of an alkali metal or an alkali earth metal; or by dissolving a halogenated cpd. of an alkali (earth) metal in a dipolar aprotic solvent. Pref. the N-containing organic cpd. is nitro, nitroso, azo or azoxy cpd.; the OH- containing cpd. is methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, butanol, etc.
