PURPOSE:To assure mechanical strength and to simultaneously facilitate production by packing a porous material into discharge regions. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal layer 3 is interposed between a 1st transparent substrate 1 which is flat and is optically sufficiently transparent and a 2nd substrate 2 which is also flat and transparent and the discharge region is formed between the liquid crystal layer 3 and the 2nd substrate 2. A band-shaped electrode 5 is formed on the main plane 1a of the substrate 1 and the liquid crystal layer consisting of a nematic liquid crystal, etc., is disposed in contact with this electrode 5 and is crimped by a thin dielectric film 6 consisting of glass, mica, plastics, etc. On the other hand, a discharge electrode group 7 is formed as a band-shaped electrode on the 2nd substrate 2 as well apart a prescribed spacing from the dielectric film 6 and is circumferentially supported by a sealant. The spacing between this 2nd substrate 2 and the dielectric film 6 is the discharge region where discharge plasma is generated. This region is partitioned to independent plasma chambers P1 to Pn by partition walls 8 and is further packed by a porous material 9. |
