摘要 <p>PURPOSE:To prevent the deterioration of engine combustibility and an engine stop by detecting the brake pedal depressing quantity exceeding the specified value, and controlling valve timing adjusting mechanism on the basis of this detection in such a way as to reduce an intake-exhaust overlap period. CONSTITUTION:In an engine 1, an intake-exhaust overlap period is changed by a valve timing adjusting mechanism 17 according to the engine speed. The valve timing adjusting mechanism 17 is controlled in such a way as to enlarge the overlap period at least in a normal rotating region. The depressing quantity of a brake pedal 24 is detected by a brake pedal depressing quantity sensor 26, and the valve timing adjusting mechanism 17 is forcibly controlled to reduce the overlap period. This results in preventing the deterioration of engine combustibility or an engine stop caused by the response delay of the valve timing adjusting mechanism 17 at the sudden braking time.</p>
