PRODUCTION OF BETA-KETOESTER

PURPOSE:To provide a new and excellent process for producing a beta-ketoester useful as a production raw material for pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals. CONSTITUTION:The objective new process for the production of a beta-ketoester such as ethyl propionylacetate is characterized by the reaction of a diazoacetic acid ester such as ethyl diazoacetate with an alkylaldehyde such as propionaldehyde in the presence of a catalytic amount of stannous chloride and a catalytic amount of a triarylmethyl salt such as trityl chloride. A beta- ketoester useful as a production raw material for pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals can be produced in high yield while suppressing the decomposition of the raw material compound and the generation of by-products.
