Control devices (8,9) are associated with electronically commutated d.c. motors (1,2). Each motor is provided with sensors (3,4) for discrimination of the phase position of the motor rotor. The sensors (3,4) function as opto-couplers evaluating a bar code provided on the rotor periphery. The output signal from each opto-coupler (3,4) is processed by a converter (5,6), e.g. with the use of a microprocessor, to establish the angular position of the rotors. The sensors are used to provide a phase-synchronous start-up of the motors by simultaneously applying a voltage to the same motor phases.
