A compact disc player (1) can be moved vertically relative to a magazine (4) in which a number of discs (5) are held. The magazine may be moved sideways (7) relative to the player for loading and unloading. A light source (7) is used to direct a beam (9) onto the edge of the compact discs and a cone shaped signal is reflected back to be received by a disc shaped photocell (10) that indicates that correct positioning has been obtained. In addition each magazine location is identified by a magnetic label containing coded data.
