The throttle valve (6) in the intake circuit to the multi-cylinder engine is supplemented by a set of slide valves (10,11), either linear or rotating, one per cylinder. They are operated by a control cable (13). A spring (15) tends to hold the row of valves in their closed position, and an electronic load-monitoring device (14) maintains the valves in their open position. If slip is detected at the driving wheels by the load-monitor, it allows the spring to close the valves partially, thus reducing load to the engine.
