A new spray nozzle is: connected to a support member/supply pipe by an intermediate element (7) made from a brittle material; and this intermediate element contains a preferential fracture region (11). The intermediate element is in the form of a cylinder (7) coaxial to the nozzle axis (A) and whose walls contain at least one circumferential groove (12,13) which constitute the preferential fracture region. Alternatively, the intermediate element may be in the form of a flat disc contg. a circular groove. The intermediate element is provided with internal and external screw threads, the internal thread receiving the nozzle and the outer threads connecting it to the support member/supply pipe. A flange of a fracture-resisting material may be screwed onto the outer thread. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used in material handling or treatment systems in which spray nozzles are employed. The nozzles can be shielded over much of their length and can have a narrow point, and in the case of a collision between a nozzle and a workpiece, serious damage to the nozzle, the nozzle support or the workpiece is avoided without having to use sensing probes.
