PURPOSE: To obtain the photographic element containing the compounds capable of releasing a group useful for photographic processing in an optimum method by using the releasing compound, having a timing group called by 'cyclic quinone' timing group. CONSTITUTION: The photographic element has on a support a silver halide emulsion layer containing a combination of an image dye-forming coupler and the releasing compound represented by formula I in which CAR is a carried group to be released from the compound at the time of photographic processing; PUG is a photographically useful group; TIME is a group to be released from CAR at the time of the photographic processing and releasing PUG and having a condensed ring represented by formula II; in formula II, each of T and Y is represented by formula III; in formulae II and III, Q is carbon and nitrogen and the like atoms necessary to complete a 5-, 6-, or 7-membered carbon ring or hetero ring; R<1> is COR<2> , or SO2 R<2> ; R<2> is an alkyl or aryl group; each of Z<1> and Z<2> is an H atom or an alkyl group or the like; each of X<1> and X<2> is same as Z<1> or Z<2> or carbon atoms or the like necessary to complete a hetero ring or the like, condensed with the ring Q.
