PURPOSE:To prevent bypassing of exhaust gas for a long term by sealing a space which is formed between a housing and catalyst to contain a shock absorbing member, and cavities which appear on fitting faces of housing flanges. CONSTITUTION:A space 3 is formed between the external face of a monolithic catalyst 1 and a catalyst housing 2 and the monolithic catalyst 1 is elastically supported by inserting a shock absorbing member 4 of metal stringsin the space. An annular seal member 5, which is put in the space 3 at the inflow side of exhaust gas, is formed by tightly compressing heat resisting woven metal strings. There exist two triangular cavities 6 enclosed by fitting faces of flanges 21a, 21b of metal plate bent members 2a, 2b and the external face of the seal member 5. Fillers 7 shaped in the same manner as the seal member 5 are respectively pressed into the cavities 6. |
