PURPOSE:To produce quartz glass with the deposition rate and yield increased even if the charge of a gaseous glass material is increased, which has not been attained by the conventional method in the synthesis of a fine glass particle deposit by the vapor-phase axis formation method. CONSTITUTION:A gaseous glass material is injected from a combustion burner and subjected to a reaction in the flame to form fine glass particles, which are deposited and collected to form the deposit. The deposit is dehydrated and heated to obtain a transparent glass preform. In this case, the reaction of the gaseous raw material and the synthesis of the deposit are carried out in a pressurized atmosphere at >=atm. The method of this invention is effectively utilized, for example, for the production of the glass preform for an optical fiber. |
