PURPOSE:To obtain the optical waveguide semiconductor controller which consumes less electric power and allows high-speed operations without etching the semiconductor layers with the semiconductor optical waveguide controller which forms an optical waveguide by controlling the optical waveguide characteristics of the semiconductor. CONSTITUTION:The multiple quantum well semiconductor layer 3 alternately laminated with the two semiconductor layers varying in band gap energy is held by the 1st semiconductor layer 1 and the 2nd semiconductor layer 2 to form double hetero-junctions. Two band-shaped upper electrodes 41, 42 are formed apart a spacing 44 atop the 1st semiconductor layer 1. Two band-shaped lower electrodes 51, 52 are formed apart a spacing 54 on the rear surface of the 2nd semiconductor layer 2. A voltage source 7 is connected to the upper electrodes 41, 42 and the lower electrodes 51, 52 to constitute the controller in such a manner that electric fields are impressed to the multiple quantum well semiconductor layer 3. |
