PURPOSE: To easily form a linear polarization stripes by providing a stepped wavelength plate and giving quarter-wave phase delay and three-quarter wave phase delay to alternating rows having right and left screens. CONSTITUTION: Light emitted from a plane panel display device 12 is subjected to planar polarization, and alternately arranged lines 14 and 16 show scenes to right and left eyes respectively. The right and left screens, alternately generated correspondingly to lines 14 and 16 can be columns or rows of a display device. Light from these lines 14 and 16 passes through a delay device and a wavelength plate 22 coinciding with display lines 14 and 16 between the quarter-wave phase delay and three-quarter wave phase delay due to forms of steps 24 and 26 alternately formed by etching. Light from lines 14 passes through the notches 24 of the wavelength plate 22 and is circularly polarized clockwise, and the light from lines 16 passes through projecting parts 26 and is circularly polarized counterclockwise. Then, a correct screen of a stereoscopic image is shown to the eyes of a person putting on circularly polarized spectacles or visor 23. Thus, linearly polarized stripes are easily formed on a screen. |
