A method of aligning two images of the same scene by matching features in a first image to features in a second image comprises identifying edges of objects in the first pixel image, provided by an intensity level spreader (24) through a filter (26), by a local edge detector (28) and a global edge detector (30). The edges identified using both processes are compared and combined, by an edge extractor (32) and a reference template generator (34), into one image representing confirmed edges which are readily identified in other images of the same scene. A template formed from the confirmed edges is matched by an edge template correlator (42) to a subregion of the second image.
