The spreading machine has a housing (1) with upright walls (2 - 5) and a cover (6) with connecting union to a granular material storage tank overhead. A chamber (8) below the cover is enclosed at the bottom by a metering drum (10) rotating on a horizontal axis (9). As it rotates, recesses (11) in its periphery accommodating the material are sealed off by the front and rear housing walls (2, 3) as the drum wipes against them. Components (13 - 15) in the chamber vary its effective cross-section, and thus the amount of granular material accommodated and its distribution over the metering drum. These can incorporate one or more bulkheads, shaped to fit against the drum at the top, and movable from outside the housing.
