PURPOSE:To solve environmental problems caused by the evaporation of low boiling solvents in a phenolic resin binder used in the preparation of granules compounded with refractory for imparting a high mechanical strength to the refractory so as to withstand mechanical loads and impacts. CONSTITUTION:A binder comprising a spherical or granular high molecular phenol formaldehyde resin and water is kneaded with flame-resistant aggregate containing <=50wt.% of a carbonic material at 60-130 deg.C with a mixer to produce the granules of the refractory, the phenolic formaldehyde resin having methylol groups in a ratio of 1/5 to 1/15 based on those of a general resol type phenol resin and containing a polymer having a weight-average mol.wt. of >=10000 before cured. In the process, the addition of a low hygroscopic and high boiling (at least >=200 deg.C) solvent permits to save a drying process by the utilization of the easily driability of the solvent. |
