A method is disclosed for the preparation of a silver bromide or iodobromide emulsion containing monodisperse tabular grains accounting for at least 50 % of the total projected area of all grains, wherein the coëfficiënt of variation of the grain size distribution of said tabular grains is at most 15 %, characterized in that an aminoazaindene is added at any stage of the emulsion preparation before 50 % of the total silver halide is precipitated. Preferred classes of aminoazaindenes are adenine derivatives and 4-amino-pyrazolo-pyrimidine derivatives. Most preferred substances are adenine and 4-amino-pyrazolo[3,4d]pyrimidine.
