The wild thyme is used for extracting essential oils with a citral tinge in its aroma, similar to that of common balm. It is used in perfumery and cosmetics. The plants are semi-bush, erect, strongly branched-out and reach up to 30 cm in height. The leaves are lanceolate, smooth-edged, and bare. The flowers are sterile, pale pink, gathered in class-like flower clusters. The variety yields a crop during the second year; the highest output is yielded from three- or four-year old plants. The output of essential oil is above 6 kg from 10 acres with average content of 0.5%. The ether oil is rich in citral, geraniol, citronellol and nerol.
