LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT

PURPOSE:To obtain the black and white liquid crystal display element of a high contrast. CONSTITUTION:The product n.d of the refractive index anisotropy ( n) of liquid crystals of the respective liquid crystal layers of a supertwisted liquid crystal element laminated with double refractive plates and the thicknesses (d) of the liquid crystal layers is varied in the picture element parts of the liquid crystal layers 3 and the parts exclusive of the picture elements and particularly the n1.d11 of the picture element parts of the liquid crystal layers 3 is specified to 0.4 to 1.5mum. The relation between the n1.d11 of the picture element parts of the liquid crystal layers 3 and the n2.d2 of the double refractive plates 4 is specified to 0.6X n1.d11 < n2.d2 < 1.1X n1.d11 and the relation between the n1.d12 of the parts exclusive of the picture element parts of the liquid crystal layers 3 and the n2.d2 of the double refractive plates 4 is specified to 0.9X n2.d2 < n1.d12 < n1.d11 so that the light transmittance in the parts exclusive of the picture element parts is substantially equalled to or below the light transmittance at the time when the picture element parts are off.
