For arranging a container 3 with radioactive material in bedrock 1 for long-term storage, a horizontal tunnel 2 is drilled in the bedrock and a load-relieving unit 4 for the container is inserted into the tunnel. The load- relieving unit has a raisable and lowerable bearing surface 7 for the container and is provided with laterally extendable supports 8 for supporting prefabricated blocks of bentonite or another protective material to be arranged between the tunnel walls and the container. The supports are then extended towards the side walls 2b of the tunnel and prefabricated blocks 16 made of protective material are arranged so as to bear against the side walls of the tunnel and against those sides of the supports facing away from the load-relieving unit. With the supports in the position indicated, the bearing surface with the container, which is arranged on it in a raised position, is lowered so that the container is brought to bear against the prefabricated blocks and the bearing surface to be freed from the container. The supports are also pushed in towards the load-relieving unit so that they are freed from the blocks. The thus completely freed load-relieving unit is then removed from the tunnel space below the container, and prefabricated blocks made of the protective material are arranged around the container in the remaining unfilled spaces closest to the container in the tunnel. <IMAGE> |
