METHOD FOR ENHANCING FIRE RESISTANCE OF FIBROUS HEAT INSULATING MATERIAL

PURPOSE: To obtain a non-wetting and/or buoyant fibrous thermal insulating material having a high level of heat insulating properties and excellent fire resistance by adding specific non-graphitic carbonaceous polymer fibers to a hollow thermoplastic fibers. CONSTITUTION: (B) Non-graphitic carbonaceous polymer fibers having >=40 LOI value measured according to the test method ASTM D-2863-77, >=65 char value and <7.7 W/(m. deg.C) (1.7 W/(m. deg.K) thermal conductivity in an amount of preferably 20-75 wt.% are added to (A) hollow thermoplastic fibers to thereby enhance the fire resistance of a fibrous thermal insulating material.
