PURPOSE:To continuously produce an aromatic carbonate, especially diphenyl carbonate, useful as a raw material for polycarbonates and isocyanate compounds in high yield and selectivity at a high reaction rate. CONSTITUTION:When an aromatic hydroxy compound is reacted with carbon monoxide and molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst to produce an aromatic carbonate, the aromatic hydroxy compound 2, and the carbon monoxide and molecular oxygen 7 are continuously fed into a continuous multi-step distillation tower 1 and brought into contact with a catalyst comprising a main catalyst and an auxiliary catalyst in the distillation tower 1 for their reaction. Water by-produced by the reaction is simultaneously continuously distilled out in a gaseous state from a line 12, and the produced aromatic carbonate 19 is continuously taken out from the lower part 18 of the column in high yield and selectivity. |
