Method for drilling a drill hole in a thick metal sheet (1), characterised in that it uses a thermal oxygen-cutting lance (5) supplied with oxygen. The machine (4) comprises a casing (box) (6) in which side openings (11) are made for releasing the gases and smoke, and a tubular guide (12), for a consumable tube (23) of the lance (5), rigidly attached to the casing (6) in a removable manner, so as to be able to be withdrawn at the same time as the consumable tube (23) after drilling a drill hole. This method enables drill holes to be made in very thick metal sheets in a time very much less than that up to now required by conventional drills. <IMAGE>
