An apparatus for heating and humidifying breathing gas supplied to a patient consists of a cylindrical vessel (26) with a sealed lid (32). The lid has an inlet (38) and an outlet (40) for the breathing gas. The gas is heated by a cylindrical heating element which fits around the outside of the vessel (26). Water is supplied through a filler tube (62) which has an outlet orifice (74) in its lower end. The water level in the vessel is controlled by a float (78) which closes the orifice (74) when the water rises to its maximum permitted level and than opens the orifice as the level falls. USE/ADVANTAGE - Heating and humidifying breathing gas with a simple apparatus.
