The clearance mechanism for used food trays to be delivered to a washing machine has a feed conveyor for the trays to an inverter mechanism, pref. formed by a rotary drum with driving members round the periphery and a tray guide. A further conveyor transports the inverted and empty trays. A third conveyor transports the cutlery and crockery falling from the inverted trays and rubbish etc., while a water trough at the bottom collects and discharges light rubbish. An extraction and discharge mechanism is provided for lightweight rubbish such as paper and uneated food, together with an initial washing mechanism for the cutlery and crockery, these being transported by a sloping vibrating grid contg. lengthwise slots, through which only cutlery and any remaining rubbish drops. Below the water level in the trough is a cutlery conveyor, receiving the falling items and delivering to the washing machine.
