The prodn. of thiocyanate-modified epichlorhydrin-contg. polyethers (I), by reaction of 1 mol. epichlorhydrin-contg. polyether (II) with 4-20 mols. alkali thiocyanate (III) at 40-130 deg.C in the presence of diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (diglyme). Pref. (II) contain 30-70 wt.% epichlorhydrin (IV) and are obtd. by polymerisation of (IV) alone or with alkylene oxides, pref. EO; examples are Herchlor H and C (RTM); pref. reaction is carried out with 7-15 mols. KSCN at 85-105 deg.C in presence of 95-90 wt.% diglyme (w.r.t. polymer); the prods. (I) are vulcanised, e.g. with ETU, Pb cpds./MgO etc., USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful for the prodn. of elastic mouldings. Modification of (II) as above gives polyethers (I) with very good oil resistance (for prodn. of tubes, seals etc.,) without adversely affecting the glass transition pt.
