Mono- and di-carboxylic acids with up to 10C, and which may contain double bonds and may be substd. by halogen, phenyl or hydroxyl gps., are reduced to the corresponding alcohols by a microbial redn. process using CO and/or a formate in the presence of a mediator (I). Suitable microorganisms for the redn. are e.g. Clostridium thermoaceticum (DSM 521), Clostridium aceticum (DSM 1496) Clostridium formicoaceticum (DSM 92) and Butyribacterium methylotrophicum (DSM 3468). (I) are e.g. (1) viologen dyes, e.g. methylviologen, benzylviologen and diquat., (2) anthraquinone and other quinone dyes, e.g. phenosafranin and anthraquinonesulphonic acids, (3) triphenylmethane dyes such as methyl violet and crystal violet; (4) phthalocyanines such as Fe-, Co- or Cu phthalocyanine; (5) methine dyes such as astraphloxin, (6) pyrrole dyes or porphyrin derivs., e.g. metal chelate complexes of these cpds., (7) pteridine and pteridone; (B) flavines such as acriflavine and lumiflavine and (9) metal complexes of metals of sub-groups 6, 7 and 8, such as Ru(L2L'2)++ where L = 1,10-phenanthrolin, 2,2-bipyridyl or 5-nitro-1,10-phenanthrolin and L' = pyridine or 4-methylpyridine; 1,1'-bis(hydroxymethyl)-ferrocene or ferrocene monocarboxylic acids.
