Tyre has a tread with a profile made up of a number of elements divided up by longitudinal and transverse grooves, but with a break in specific area where desired. Pref. the tread has many elements of different sizes. Small blocks (A) have small road contact and resistance; somewhat larger blocks (B) and medium size blocks (C) are also present, whilst others (D,E) are very large and the latter (E) have relatively great road contact, a large volume and usually high resistance. These blocks are joined by grooves (St) of varying depth which can be divided into four stages. In the case of IV the base of the groove is partly interrupted in depth, but where the feature is shown as (g) (e.g, IIg) the base extends across the full length of groove. The effect of the variations in the details is to vary the vibrating behaviour and hence to reduce the overall noise generated. ADVANTAGE - The tread design minimises noise prodn. by suppressing their generation and improving the damping of vibrations in the profile blocks and grooves. It can be applied to any tread profile system.
