The IC engine has an main combustion chamber with a spark plug, and an auxiliary chamber in a cylinder head, connected via an overflow bore. During the compression stroke, fuel/air mixture is pressed through the bore into the auxiliary chamber, and with continuation of the stroke, is pushed into the main chamber, by a cam-operated displacement piston. The overflow (10) is coaxial to the stroke piston (2), and opens into the path of the displacement piston (8), near the end wall of the auxiliary chamber (9). It is closed by that piston, when the stroke piston is in position between ignition and overlapping positions. The spark plug is located on the opening of the overflow on the main chamber side. The direction of the ignition jet is ortogonal to the base of the stroke piston.
