The IR detector (1), fixed to the outside of a rail (5) for location of wheels (7) overheated by friction in their external bearings (3), is checked by excitation of an IR emitter (2) fitted to the underside of the bogie frame (6). The emitter is a heating element, to which electric current is supplied through a manually operated switch as the vehicle overruns the detector. Two such IR emitters may be switched to simulate so called warm and hot bearings at 70 and 120 deg.C. USE/ADVANTAGE - For railway vehicle wheels, with improved location of overheated wheels for min. interference with traffic.
