A method is disclosed for checking the correct release of the shoes (12, 14) of a brake and the state of wear of the friction linings (16, 18), which brake is provided with sensors (34, 36) for detecting the position of the shoes, sensors (30, 32) for detecting the wear of the friction linings, a defect relay (46) capable of ordering stopping of the machine when the position (34, 36) and wear (30, 32) sensors detect insufficient release of the shoes or wear of the linings, and means (42, 44) for processing the data received from said sensors ((30, 32; 34, 36). The method consists in automatically simulating, cyclically and permanently, a release defect of the shoes and wear of the friction linings, so as to test the operation of said detect relay and said processing means, and in automatically re-setting said defect relay, after each defect and wear simulation, so as to bring it to its normal condition.
