The invention provides: (1) a glass composition comprising about 20 to about 85% of SiO2, about 2 to about 75% of B2O3, 15% or less of Al2O3, about 30% or less of at least one of Li2O, Na2O, K2O, Rb2O and Cs2O, about 10% or less of at least one of MgO, CaO, ZnO, BaO, SrO and PhO, about 10% or less of at least one of ZrO2, La2O3, Y2O3, Ta2O3 and Gd2O3, and about 0.05 to about 15% of at least one copper halide; and (2) a glass composition comprising about 8 to about 25% of SiO2, about 5 to about 35% of P2O5, about 30% or less of B2O3, about 10 to about 35% of Al2O3, about 5 to about 20% of at least one of LI2O, Na2O, K2O, Rb2O and Cs2O, about 20% or less of at least one of MgO, CaO, ZnO, BaO, SrO and PbO, about 10% or less of at least one of ZrO2, La2O3, Y2O3, Ta2O3 and Gd2O3, and about 0.05 to about 15% of at least one copper halide.
