An agglutination test for detecting mycobacterium in a sample obtained from a biological fluid is provided. The test involves contacting the sample with particles coated with a monoclonal antibody directed towards a mycobacterium under conditions that permit agglutination visible to the naked eye when less than 10,000 bacteria per ml of biological fluid are present. Preferably the agglutination is enhanced with an enhancer provided at a concentration just below the minimum concentration of enhancer that allows autoagglutination of the particles detectable with the naked eye in the absence of an antigen. Also provided are kits and kit components for performing the agglutination test. |
