An enzyme immunoassay for determining the presence of antibodies reactive with mycobacterial antigens in a serum sample is provided. A serum sample is contacted with a mycobacterial antigen coated on a solid phase under conditions which permit antibody-mycobacterial antigen binding to occur. The presence of the antibody-antigen conjugate then is detected. The assay employs a reference serum that permits reproducible discrimination between samples from individuals with active mycobacterial disease versus those from non-diseased subjects. The reference serum corresponds to a cut-off point above which the serum sample is considered positive for mycobacterial disease and below which the serum sample is considered negative for microbacterial disease. The assay is particularly useful for detecting tuberculosis. Kits for performing the assay also are provided. |
