The invention concerns a method and device for controlling a radio transmitter. According to the method the radio transmitter is controlled alternately to the ON position in which the RF power coming from the transmitter has the required size and to the OFF position where the RF power is not transmitted, and in the ON position the RF power is determined by means of a power control signal Vc which controls the amplification in the transmitter amplifiers 3, 4. In order to facilitate controlling the rate at which the power increases, the power control signal Vc is given a value other than zero even in the OFF position. <IMAGE>
