Class 2(3). process for the oxychlorination of saturated aliphatic. hydrocarbons and their incompletely chlorinated derivatives comprises reacting in the vapour phase material to be chlorinated with oxygen and a chlorinating agent which is chlorine and/or hydrogen chloride in a multivalent metal halide catalytic reaction zone, there being fed to the reaction zone an unsaturated chlorinated C 2-4 hydrocarbon, preferably in a proportion of less than 30%, e.g. 3-20%, by weight of the total organic feed. The catalyst may also contain alkali or alkaline -earth .metals. The oxygen may be diluted. Temperatures of 325-700‹C. may be used, controlled by a heat exchange medium in coils in the reactor or in a jacket, the temperature of the medium being usually 30-375‹C. below the catalyst temperature. Fixed, dynamic or fluidised catalyst beds may be used. Preferably enough oxygen is used to provide some unreacted oxygen in the exit gases, e.g. 0.2 to 1.5 moles per mole of chlorinating agent. 0.5 to 5 moles or more of chlorinating agent per mole of hydrocarbon feed may be used. In examples, perchloroethylene and trichloroethylene are obtained from 1,2-dichloroethane in the presence of cis 1 ,2-dichloroethylene.</p>
