[Also in Division A5] The invention comprises thiazolyl derivatives of the formula in which X and Y are identical or different and represent hydrogen or halogen or a thiocyanato, cyano, carboxyl alkoxycarbonyl, amino, hydroxyl, hydroxyalkyl, C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 alkoxy, C 1-4 halogenated alkyl, C 1-4 halogenated alkoxy, aryl, halogenated aryl, alkylaryl, alkoxyaryl, halogenated alkylaryl, halogenated alkoxyaryl, aryloxy, halogenated aryloxy or a alkylaryloxy group; Z represents oxygen or sulphur; R 1 represents hydrogen, or an alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms, an alkylacyl, halogenated alkylacyl, arylacyl, halogenated arylacyl, alkylarylacyl or alkoxyarylacyl group, and each of R 2 and R 3 represent hydrogen or an alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyl, alkenoxy or alkynyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms, or an alkylaryl, halogenated alkylaryl, aryl, halogenated aryl, aryloxy or a halogenated aryloxy group, provided that R 2 and R 3 are not both hydrogen. Compounds in which both R 1 and R 3 are hydrogen are prepared by reacting a 2-amino-thiazole of the formula with an isocyanate or isothiocyanate Z = C=N-R 2 , where R 2 is other than hydrogen. Compounds in which R 1 is hydrogen are prepared by reacting the above amino-thiazole with a carbamoyl or thiocarbamoyl halide Q-C(=Z)NR 2 R 3 , where Q is halogen, in the presence of an acid-acceptor. Compounds in which R 1 is other than hydrogen are obtained by reacting the compounds in R is hydrogen with R 1 <SP>1</SP>Q<SP>1</SP>, where R 1 <SP>1</SP> is the same as R 1 , excluding hydrogen, and Q<SP>1</SP> is halogen in the presence of an acid bending agent. Numerous compounds are specified. The thiazole derivatives are used as herbicides (see Division A5). |
