In H2/O2 fuel cell batteries (2) which contain a freely mobile electrolyte (1) and which are operating in a weightless environment, measures have to be taken to remove the gaseous reactants dissolved in the electrolyte. For this purpose, hydrogen and oxygen are first catalytically reacted to form water and then the fraction of one of the gaseous reactants in the electrolyte exceeding a molar ratio of H2:O2 of 2:1 is reacted electrochemically at a gas consuming electrode (6).
