An imidazole compound represented by the general formula wherein R is an alkyl group having up to 17 carbon atoms or a phenyl group. This imidazole compound is useful as a curing agent or curing accelerator for epoxy resins, and can be produced by hydrolyzing a 1-acylaminoethyl-imidazole compound.
