The baseplate (11) of the device is placed on the floor of the trench or manhole (1) so that its support plate (8) and ribs (12) are positioned firmly at the bottom of the wall (9) of the hole. The toothed clamp (7) is slid over the end of the pipe or cable (3) which protrudes from the wall. The handle (6) is pulled (P) to pivot the lever (10) towards the main pipe or cable (2) at the other side of the hole. The rear pointing teeth dig into the surface of the pipe or cable, drawing it through the earth. As the handle is pivoted back again, the teeth disengage.
