METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CELL CULTURE

Adhesive cells proliferating in a preliminary culture tank of a small size, stripped off from immobilizing carriers and then mixed with a part of culture medium adjusted in an intermediate reservoir to obtain a quantity of cell suspension, collected cell suspension thus obtained into the intermediate reservoir to be stored therein, transferred the cell suspension, after the cell distribution therein has been uniformalized, into a main culture tank filled with immobilizing carriers containing ceramic material as a main ingredient so that the cells adhere to the immobilizing carriers and are further cultivated, and finally producing physiologically active substance on a quantity of culture medium of this purpose. A cell culuture tank comprises an inversed funnel-shaped inlet located above the immobilizing carriers filling the tank and having a perforated bottom plate for uniform distribution of a quantity of cell suspension supplied from above to the immobilizing carriers, a netty plate located under the immobilizing carriers to support the immobilizing carriers, and another perforated plate also located under the immobilizing carriers for uniform distribution of another quantity of cell suspension supplied from bottom to the immobilizing carriers.
