The fuel injectors are supplied with fuel by pump (18) driven by the pulley belt (12). The fuel pressure is not enough to operate the valve at the injector nozzle. The extra pressure required to operate the injector is derived from the cams on the camshaft (32) and the sequencing of the injectors comes from an electronic control box (10), whose outputs operate electromagnetic valves. The input to the control box is a signal supplied by an inductive sensor mounted by the flywheel. The sensor sends a stream of pulses to the control box which indicate rotational speed and crankshaft angle and for a 6-cylinder engine, there are three angles at which one or other of a pair of injectors can be operated. The mark-space ratio of the sensor output is different for these three angular positions, so that the absolute crankshaft position is known by the control box at any time. USE/ADVANTAGE - Electronic fuel injection for vehicles. Uses flywheel to give necessary crankshaft speed and position; obviates the need for camshaft sensor. |
