VI. The present invention provides a paper surface treating agent and is characterized in that its active ingredient is a copolymer which is prepared by emulsification polymerization of a monomer composition comprising a number of monomers in a given ratio in the presence of an anionic emulsifier and which has a glass transition temperature of over 80.degree.C. Using the paper surface treating agent according to the present invention yields a coat with fine pores on the surface of paper to provide an excellent gloss thereon and offers good printing ink set to improve the printability.
