PURPOSE:To easily and efficiently perform a performance using an external memory medium by automatically determining an operation mode wherein the function of the external memory medium can be realized every time the external memory medium is set. CONSTITUTION:One desired disk for timbre selection among plural disks is inserted and set on a disk device 10. The disk device 10 outputs a disk insertion detection signal DS and reads the identification code of the disk to output a disk function identification signal FS. The operation mode of the electronic musical instrument is automatically set to a timbre selection mode. A display unit 13 displays the contents of timbre selection data stored on the disk for timbre selection and names of selectable timbre are displayed in a display area below them. A user operates the selection switch 16 of a console panel 12 over a look at the timbre selection picture. Consequently, the performance using the external memory medium is easily and efficiently carried out.
