PURPOSE:To focus or disperse charged particles and to give a lens function at the same time, by making the distance between magnetic pole end faces longer or shorter along the electric field direction relative to the positive or the negative charged particles respectively, in a mass spectrometer. CONSTITUTION:By providing electrodes 2 opposing in the x axis direction, and applying a voltage, an electric field is generated in the positive direction of the x axis. By providing negative poles 1 in the y axis direction, and making the + side as the N pole and the- side as the S pole, a magnetic flux density B is generated in the -y direction. However, since the clearance between the end faces of the magnetic poles is made shorter along the electric field direction, the magnetic flux density is also increased in the +x direction, and reduced in the -x direction. As a result, the beams are focused in the x axis direction. And when the inclination of the magnetic pole end faces is in the reverse direction, the beams are dispersed. the focusing and the dispersing are then made in the reverse direction in case of the positive and the negative ions. Consequently, the mass spectrometer exercises the function as a lens as well as a mass spectrometer. |
